Everything you need for your Sutherland Backpack, organized into a simple shopping list. Quantities are for one project.

Shop Zipper Tape & Pulls

Before you shop: Add the padded-strap quantities only when making that version.

01   Fabrics

• Exterior: Approx. 1 yd. (100 cm).
• Lining: Approx. 2 yd. (200 cm).

02   Interfacing & Stabilizers

• Approx. 2 1/2 yd. (250 cm) lightweight woven fusible interfacing, such as Pellon SF101 or Sew Fuse. Generally not required with vinyl, cork or waterproof canvas; useful for subtle one-way stretch.
• Approx. 1/2 yd. (50 cm) Pellon Flex Foam FF78F1, Decovil Light or two layers of Sew Fuse Plus.
• 1/4 yd. (25 cm) Decovil Heavy 526.

03   Hardware & Zippers

• 4–6 rivets or Chicago screws. Choose 6–7 mm posts for thinner fabrics or 8–9 mm posts for thicker fabrics.
• 2 1/4 yd. (230 cm) of #3 or #5 zipper tape + 6 matching pulls, or 4 pulls if using single pulls on both main compartments.
• 2 × 1" O-rings, D-rings or Rectangle Rings.
• 2 × 1" Tri-Glides/Strap Sliders.

04   Bias Binding

• Approx. 5 yd. (500 cm) of binding. If making your own, cut quilting cotton 2" (5 cm) wide or waterproof canvas 1" (2.5 cm) wide.
• If purchasing, use approx. 5 yd. (500 cm) of 1/2" (13 mm) double-fold bias binding.

05   Padded Strap Option

• Add approx. 1/2 yd. (50 cm) exterior fabric and 1/2 yd. (50 cm) lining fabric.
• Add 2 1/4 yd. (210 cm) bias binding.
• Add approx. 1/2 yd. (50 cm) Pellon Flex Foam FF78F1 or FF79F.

06   Sewing Tools

• Rotary Cutter or Scissors.
• Double-Sided Tape.
• Grid Ruler and Cutting Mat.
• Erasable Fabric Pen.
• Rivet Setter or Rivet Press.
