COMMON PATTERN QUESTIONS

Can I use directional fabric?

Yes, but additional fabric may be required depending on the print direction and pattern layout.

Do you provide help for modified patterns?

We are unable to troubleshoot issues involving modified, resized, or customized versions of our patterns, as modifications can affect construction and fit.

Where is the video tutorial link?

Video tutorial links are included in the pattern instructions, usually on page 2. You can also find the tutorial video on the product listing or by searching the pattern name on YouTube.

How do I resize a sewing pattern?

You can resize many sewing patterns by adjusting the print percentage in your printer settings. Our Pattern Size Calculator can help estimate the new finished dimensions before printing.

Printing at 100% keeps the pattern at its original intended size. Printing below 100% reduces the finished size proportionally, while printing above 100% enlarges the finished size.

For example, printing a bag pattern at 80% reduces all finished dimensions proportionally.

Do seam allowances need to be added?

No. Seam allowances are already included unless otherwise stated in the pattern instructions.

Can I use domestic sewing machines for your patterns?

Most Sew Yours patterns are designed to be completed on a domestic sewing machine. However, thicker materials and multiple layers may require slower sewing or reduced bulk.

What needle should I use?

Needle choice depends on your materials. Denim, Microtex, or leather needles are commonly used for bag making. Always test on scraps first.

What do RS, WS, RST, and WST mean?

RS = Right Side

WS = Wrong Side

RST = Right Sides Together

WST = Wrong Sides Together

I only see part of a pattern piece. Is my file incomplete?

Some larger pattern pieces are split across multiple pages and must be taped together before use.

To assemble the pattern:

  • Cut the pattern pages along the designated cutting lines
  • Match the shapes or squares containing the same letter to the corresponding shapes or squares on the adjoining page
  • Butt the pages directly against each other without overlapping
  • Tape the pages together once aligned

Carefully matching the shapes/letters will ensure the pattern pieces line up correctly before cutting your fabric.

Can I sell bags made from Sew Yours patterns?

Yes. Sew Yours patterns may be used to create finished bags for personal use, gifts, or small handmade business sales.

Mass production, factory production, and large-scale commercial manufacturing of items made from Sew Yours patterns is not permitted.

If selling finished items made from a Sew Yours pattern, please credit Sew Yours as the pattern designer whenever possible. We also appreciate including the pattern name in your listing or product description.

Pattern files, instructions, videos, and templates may not be copied, shared, redistributed, or resold.

Are your patterns beginner friendly?

Our patterns are designed for sewists with basic sewing knowledge and familiarity with standard bag-making techniques.

Depending on the construction methods and materials used, some patterns may be better suited for confident beginners or intermediate sewists.

Please review each pattern listing for the recommended skill level.

How do I assemble my PDF pattern pieces?

Please make sure your pattern is printed at 100% scale before assembling the pages.

Why doesn’t my bag look exactly like the example photos?

Fabric choice, interfacing, stabilizers, machine settings, seam allowances, and sewing techniques can all affect the final appearance of a finished bag.

Carefully following the recommended materials and instructions will help achieve the intended results.

My finished bag measurements are slightly different from the pattern listing. Is this normal?

Yes. Final bag size can vary slightly depending on interfacing, seam accuracy, fabric thickness, and pressing methods.

Can you mail me a printed copy of my pattern?

Sew Yours patterns are provided as digital PDF downloads only. We do not offer printed pattern mailing services.

Patterns may be printed at home using Adobe Acrobat Reader at 100% scale or through a local print shop, office supply store, or online PDF printing service.

All Sew Yours patterns include printing instructions and a free video tutorial on our YouTube channel.

Can quilt shops or instructors teach Sew Yours patterns?

Yes. Quilt shops, instructors, and sewing groups are welcome to teach Sew Yours patterns for in-person classes and workshops.

Each participant must purchase their own individual Sew Yours pattern. Pattern files, printed copies, and tutorial content may not be copied, shared, redistributed, or reproduced for classroom use.

Sew Yours does not offer discounts, donations, sponsorships, or reduced pricing on patterns, supplies, hardware, fabrics, or other products for classes, guilds, retreats, fundraisers, giveaways, or group events.

VIDEO TUTORIALS & RESOURCES

Many common questions about our patterns, products, and basic sewing techniques are answered on our YouTube channel and throughout our FAQ page. Browse the resources below for helpful tutorials, tips, and guidance.

Do you offer in-person sewing classes?

Sew Yours does not offer in-person sewing or bag making classes.

However, all Sew Yours sewing patterns include a free video tutorial available on our YouTube channel.

Many common sewing techniques, pattern tips, and project guidance can also be found throughout our FAQ page and included pattern instructions.

CUTTING & MEASUREMENTS

Why don’t all pattern pieces include measurements?

Measurements are only provided for pattern pieces with four straight sides, such as rectangles and squares. Pattern pieces with curves or shaped edges are designed to be cut out and used as physical templates to cut your fabric.

I can’t find the pattern piece for the strap, handle, or pockets.

Pattern pieces are not provided for most straps, handles, slip pockets, or zipper pockets. Instead, the measurements for these pieces are listed in the cutting guide within the pattern. Be sure to review the cutting guide carefully, as it includes all required pattern pieces, measurements where applicable, and important notes.

Can I share or print copies of my pattern for friends or family?

Sew Yours patterns are protected by copyright and are intended for individual purchaser use only. Pattern files, printed copies, video tutorials, and instructions may not be copied, shared, redistributed, or resold without permission.

Printing or distributing copies for friends, family, groups, or classes without authorization may infringe upon the copyright holder’s rights and violate intellectual property laws.

Each person using the pattern should purchase their own copy directly through Sew Yours.

Where do I enter my password to access my account?

We use a password-free login system. Just enter your email, then check your inbox or spam folder for a one-time code. Use it to access your account, downloads, and order history.

I can’t open my PDF file.

Please make sure you are using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader or another compatible PDF reader. Some mobile devices and browsers may not properly open large PDF sewing patterns.

We recommend downloading the file directly to a computer before opening.

Why is my pattern not printing to scale?

Sew Yours patterns are tested for printing accuracy before release.

If your pattern is not printing correctly, please check the following:

  • Make sure your printer settings are set to:
    “100% Scale”
NOT “Fit to Page” or “Shrink to Fit”
  • Verify the test square included in the pattern before printing the full file
  • Ensure you are printing directly from a downloaded PDF file using Adobe Acrobat Reader when possible

Please note that printing from phones, tablets, mobile browsers, or certain built-in PDF viewers can sometimes cause patterns to print incorrectly or out of scale.

For best results, we recommend downloading the pattern to a desktop or laptop computer before printing.

Can I access my downloads on mobile devices?

Yes, however some mobile devices may have difficulty opening large PDF pattern files. For the best experience, we recommend downloading and opening files on a desktop or laptop computer using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Do you accept resale or tax exemption certificates?

No, Sew Yours does not accept resale or tax exemption certificates. All orders are subject to applicable sales tax as required by law.

• Discount codes must be entered during checkout
• Discounts cannot be applied after an order is placed
• Coupon codes cannot be combined with other discounts, promotions, or previous orders unless specifically stated

Do you offer discounts, donations, sponsorships, or wholesale pricing?

Thank you for understanding.

FAUX LEATHER | VINYL | WATERPROOF CANVAS

Can faux leather or vinyl be ironed?

Direct heat can damage faux leather and vinyl. If pressing is necessary, use low heat from the wrong side with a pressing cloth and always test first.

Why does my faux leather or vinyl arrive curled?

Rolled materials may relax naturally after laying flat for a short period of time. Warm room temperatures can help reduce curling.

Are creases permanent?

Most light creases will relax over time, but deep folds or sharp bends may remain visible. We recommend storing materials rolled instead of folded whenever possible. You can also try gently warming the right side of the material with a hair dryer to help relax creases.

Can waterproof / resistant canvas & LinerTex™ be washed?

Spot cleaning is recommended. Machine washing may affect the waterproof coating and structure of the fabric.

Is waterproof canvas completely waterproof?

Waterproof canvas features a PVC coating on the wrong side that helps repel water and moisture. While the material itself is water resistant, seams and stitch holes are not waterproof unless they are specially sealed.

Why does my fabric have a smell when opened?

Some materials may have a temporary manufacturing odor when first opened. This typically fades after airing out.

LINERTEX | RIPSTOP | LININGS

Does LinerTex™ or water-resistant canvas need interfacing?

Most water-resistant and waterproof materials do not require additional interfacing due to their structured feel.

Final structure depends on the desired finish and pattern requirements.

In most cases, we do not add interfacing to LinerTex™, though we may occasionally interface our water-resistant canvas prints depending on the project.

Can LinerTex be used as an exterior fabric?

LinerTex is primarily designed as a lining material, but some customers also use it for lightweight exterior applications.

Does ripstop need interfacing or ironing?

We do not recommend ironing ripstop. Due to its lightweight waterproof coating, high heat may damage or distort the material.

In most cases, interfacing is not needed, but final structure depends on the pattern and desired finish.

Does ripstop fray?

Ripstop is designed to resist tearing, but raw edges may still fray slightly and can be finished if desired.

INTERFACING & STABILIZERS

What interfacing should I use?

Recommended interfacing and stabilizer suggestions are included in each pattern and should always be followed first. The best interfacing depends on your fabric choice and desired structure. Please note that substitute materials may affect the final shape, structure, and appearance of your bag.

New to bag making? We’ve also created a helpful video explaining common interfacing and stabilizer options. Watch it here.

Can I substitute stabilizers?

Yes, but substitutions may change the final shape, stiffness, and feel of the finished bag.

Why does my interfacing bubble or wrinkle?

Bubbling is usually caused by incorrect heat, steam, or pressing time. Always follow manufacturer instructions and test on scraps first.

ZIPPER TAPE & PULLS

Are zipper pulls included with zipper tape?

No. Zipper tape and zipper pulls are sold separately unless otherwise stated.

How many zipper pulls do I need?

Most standard bags require 1–2 zipper pulls depending on the design. We recommend purchasing 3-4 zipper pulls for every yard of zipper tape.

Can I use any zipper pull with any zipper tape?

No. Be sure to match the zipper pull size to the zipper tape size.

Why is my zipper pull difficult to install?

Zipper pulls are easiest to install when the zipper tape ends are trimmed evenly and inserted carefully at the same time.

For easier installation, we recommend using a zipper jig, which helps hold the zipper pull steady during installation.

PRODUCT DETAILS

What pattern was used in the sample bag photos?

When available, the pattern used for sample bags is listed and linked in the product description. Some images are digital renderings or inspiration photos and may not correspond to a specific sewing pattern. We are unable to identify or provide pattern information beyond what is listed on the product page.

Will the fabric or zipper color match a previous order?

Colors may vary between production runs, especially on suede, canvas, vinyl, and printed fabrics. If your project requires exact color matching, we recommend purchasing all needed yardage at one time.

We cannot guarantee an exact color match on future reorders.

Will yardage be continuous?

We cut cotton fabric and stabilizers as one continuous piece whenever possible.

If our inventory is off and we're short more than 1 yard, we'll contact you to ask whether you prefer a refund for the full amount of just the portion that's unavailable.

If we're short less than 1 yard, we'll refund that amount automatically and email you to let you know.

Can hardware finishes vary in color?

Yes. Hardware finishes may vary slightly between manufacturing batches, plating processes, and suppliers.

Antique Brass finishes are hand-applied and naturally vary from piece to piece. Rainbow finishes also vary between items, making each piece unique.

Light Gold hardware may occasionally appear slightly warmer or more yellow depending on the supplier or production batch. We strive to carry Light Gold finishes with minimal yellow tones whenever possible. If hardware arrives with a stronger yellow-gold appearance, we label those items as Gold rather than Light Gold whenever possible to help set accurate expectations.

Are your hardware sizes exact?

Hardware measurements are approximate and may vary slightly between manufacturing batches.

Are cuts always exact?

Fabric cuts are approximate and may vary slightly due to the cutting process.

What is Eco-Friendly Vinyl?

Eco-friendly vinyl is a type of synthetic material that is manufactured using processes designed to reduce environmental impact compared to traditional vinyl. Depending on the manufacturer, this may include reducing harmful chemicals, minimizing emissions during production, or using materials that meet specific environmental and safety standards.

For bag making, eco-friendly vinyl offers the same durability, water resistance, and easy-to-clean surface that makers expect from standard vinyl, while being produced with a greater focus on environmental responsibility.

Please note that "eco-friendly" can mean different things depending on the manufacturer and production process.

COLOR MATCHING & RECOMMENDATIONS

Do you offer color matching assistance?

We do our best to photograph products accurately and provide coordinating recommendations through our Matchmaker Guide and Matchmaker Monday videos. Exact color matching cannot be guaranteed due to screen settings, lighting conditions, and dye lot variations.

Because color perception is subjective, we do not provide personalized color matching or product coordination services. For pairing ideas and inspiration, we recommend browsing our Matchmaker Guide and watching our Matchmaker Monday series.

What is Matchmaker Monday?

Matchmaker Monday is our weekly coordinated fabric feature where we pair exterior fabrics, lining fabrics, zipper tape, thread, and recommended hardware finishes to help take the guesswork out of coordinating your next bag project.

Are zipper colors an exact match to hardware finishes?

Slight color variation between zipper components and hardware can occur.

Are zipper colors an exact match to Sew Yours materials?

While we do our best to coordinate zipper tape colors with our materials, slight color variations may occur. Be sure to check our Matchmaker Guide, where we note whether a pairing is a perfect match, close match, or contrast option.

Why do colors look different in person?

Screen settings, lighting, and device displays can affect how colors appear online. We do our best to photograph and edit product photos as accurately as possible.

How do I coordinate fabrics and hardware?

Coordinating fabrics and hardware comes down to balancing color, texture, and finish. Many customers start with a focal fabric first, then choose coordinating linings, zipper tape, thread, and hardware finishes that complement the overall look. Warm-toned fabrics often pair well with Light Gold or Antique Brass hardware, while cooler tones commonly work well with Nickel or Gunmetal. Contrast can also be used intentionally to make certain details stand out.

SHIPPING & ORDERS

Where do you ship?

Sew Yours ships physical products only within the United States, including all 50 states.

Which shipping carrier do you use?

Orders may ship through USPS, UPS, or FedEx depending on package size, destination, shipping rates, and operational needs.

Shipping carriers are selected by Sew Yours at the time of shipment and cannot be requested or changed by customers.

Tracking information will be provided once your order ships.

I’m outside the United States. Can I still purchase your sewing patterns?

Yes. While Sew Yours website orders are limited to U.S. customers only, many of our digital sewing patterns are available internationally through our Etsy shop.

Physical products, hardware, fabrics, and supplies are not available for international shipping.

Can I change or cancel my order after it's been placed?

We work hard to process and ship orders quickly so you can start creating sooner. Because orders begin moving through our fulfillment process immediately, we do not accept order changes or cancellations once an order has been placed.

This includes:

  • Adding or removing items
  • Modifying an order
  • Updating your shipping address
  • Updating payment information
  • Canceling an order

We also do not combine separate orders or refund shipping charges for orders placed separately, even if they are placed on the same day or only minutes apart.

To avoid paying shipping more than once, please make sure your cart contains everything you'd like to purchase before completing checkout.

Please review your order carefully before submitting it, as once an order has been placed, it cannot be changed or canceled.

What if my package was returned due to a bad address?

Contact us. We can reship it once you pay the reshipment fee.

My tracking hasn’t updated in several business days. What should I do?

USPS tracking can occasionally stop updating while a package is still moving through the network. If it has been 3 or more business days since the last carrier scan on your tracking number, please submit a support request through our Help Center and include your order number in your message.

Once we receive your request, we will submit a Missing Mail Search with the carrier on your behalf. These searches can take up to 7 business days to complete.

If the package is not located after the 7 business day search period, we will reship your order and file a claim with the carrier.

To help us keep all tracking issues documented properly, please do not call about tracking delays. All requests must be submitted in writing through the Help Center.

What if my package doesn't arrive?

Please read our shipping policy.

My package shows as delivered, but I cannot find it.

Sew Yours is not responsible for packages marked as delivered by the shipping carrier. Refunds or replacements will not be issued for delivered packages, and Sew Yours does not file claims for packages confirmed as delivered.

If you cannot locate your package, please check around your property thoroughly, including:

  • Front and side doors
  • Garages
  • Porches
  • Mailrooms
  • Bushes or hidden areas
  • With neighbors or household members

Please note that carriers sometimes scan packages as delivered before final drop-off, or packages may occasionally be delivered to a nearby address by mistake.

We also recommend contacting your local post office or shipping carrier directly, as they may be able to provide additional delivery details or GPS scan information.

If your package is still missing after several days, you may need to file a claim directly with the shipping carrier. Sew Yours can provide shipment documentation upon request to assist with the claim process.

When will a sold-out item be restocked?

Restock timelines vary depending on supplier availability and production schedules. Follow our newsletter and social media pages for restock updates and announcements.

To get notified first of restocks go to the sold-out item’s page and click the black “Notify Me” button at the top of your screen. Enter your email to be alerted when it's back in stock.

Why was my order refunded?

Occasionally, inventory discrepancies can occur and an item may become unavailable after your order is placed.

If this happens after your order has entered fulfillment, the unavailable item(s) will be automatically refunded, and you'll receive an email notification.

To avoid delaying shipment of the remaining items in your order, we do not contact customers to discuss substitutions, order changes, or cancellations once fulfillment has begun. The unavailable item(s) are refunded, and the remaining items in your order are shipped.

Do you accept returns?

Digital Patterns:
Due to the nature of digital products, PDF sewing patterns are non-refundable.

Physical Products:
We accept returns on select unused, unopened items within 3 days of delivery. Some exclusions apply. For full details, visit our Return Policy.
